The Mirena coil can now be used for 8 years for contraception
Thursday, February 1, 2024
The Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health have recently announced that the Mirena coil can now stay in place for up to 8 years when used for contraception. This applies to any Mirena coils that women currently have, as well as newly fitted coils.
Some women use their Mirena coil as part of their HRT. When used for HRT the Mirena must still be renewed every 5 years to ensure there is enough protection of the lining of the womb.
It is important that women know the reason that they are using their Mirena.
We will be updating our recall system so that women are contacted for a coil renewal at the right time.
