We are aware that our waiting list for contraceptive services currently stands at approximately three months. Unfortunately, this morning, four patients did not attend their scheduled appointments despite having received reminders. These missed appointments mean that others on the waiting list are missing out on the opportunity for timely care.
We understand that patients might feel nervous about contraceptive procedures such as having a coil or intrauterine system, or device fitted. However, please remember:
- The clinician fitting the intrauterine device (IUD) or coil will stop at any time if you request.
- You can have a friend, family member, or another member of staff in the room with you during the fitting for support.
What to Expect During the Procedure:
- A nurse or doctor will gently insert a smooth, tube-shaped tool (a speculum) into your vagina to open it, similar to a cervical screening (smear) test.
- They will then gently insert the IUD into your womb through your cervix.
- You may experience mild period-like pain for a few days after the IUD is fitted. Over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen can help with any discomfort.
- Light bleeding (spotting) is also common.
Benefits of an IUD:
- Effective for 5 to 10 years, depending on the type.
- A trained doctor or nurse can remove your IUD at any time.
- An IUD is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
- Some types of IUS can make periods shorter or lighter, or stop them altogether.
Important Reminder:
If you have an appointment with our contraception clinic and cannot attend, please be courteous and inform us in advance. This allows us to offer your appointment to someone else in need.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
